Acts 8:35

"The eunuch answered Philip, “Who is the prophet talking about? About himself, or about someone else?”"

Key Reflection

This question highlights the eunuch's earnest desire for understanding and his recognition that the prophecy could apply to multiple levels of meaning—possibly to the speaker himself or to a future leader, such as Jesus. It reflects both his curiosity and his openness to the broader implications of the prophecy.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 35. Opened his mouth. See Mt 5:2. At the same Scripture. Taking this as a text to be illustrated. Preached unto him Jesus. Showed him that Jesus of Nazareth exactly answered to the description of the prophet; and that therefore the prophet referred to the Messiah, and that that Messiah was Jesus of Nazareth. How far Philip detailed the circumstances of the life and death of Christ is unknown. What follows shows also that he stated the design of baptism, and the duty of being baptized.
