Zechariah 3:2

"He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the LORD’s angel, and Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary."

Key Reflection

In Zechariah 3:2, the prophet sees a vision where Joshua, representing the people of Israel, stands before the Lord's angel. At his right side, Satan is positioned as an adversary. This scene sets up a powerful contrast between divine support and earthly opposition. The cultural context highlights the significance of this vision, as in ancient Near Eastern thought, the presence of a divine messenger signified important revelations or judgments. Here, Joshua’s role as a priest symbolizes the people’s standing before God, while Satan's adversarial position foreshadows the coming trials and temptations that would test their faith and obedience.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee -Jerome: “This they so explain, that the Father and the Son is Lord, as we read in thePsalms 110:1-7, “The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit Thou on My right hand.” The Lord speaketh of another Lord; not that He, the Lord who speaketh, cannot rebuke, but that, from the unity of nature, when the Other rebuketh, He Himself who speaketh rebuketh. For “he who seeth the Son, seeth the Father also”John 14:9. It may be that God, by such sayings , also accustomed people, before Christ came, to believe in the Plurality of Persons in the One Godhead. The rebuke of God must be with power.
