Titus 1:6

"I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you—"

Key Reflection

Paul wrote to Titus from prison, instructing him to return to Crete with a specific task: to complete unfinished work by setting things in order where they were lacking and to appoint qualified elders in each city as previously directed. This task was crucial for establishing stable leadership and addressing organizational needs within the fledgling Christian communities on Crete. The phrase "set in order" (epidiorthosis) implies a comprehensive rectification of any deficiencies, ensuring that the church could function properly under sound spiritual guidance.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 6. If any be blameless, the husband of one wife. See Barnes "1 Ti 3:2". Having faithful children. See Barnes "1 Ti 3:4,6". That is, having a family well-governed, and well-trained in religion. The word here -pista-- applied to the children, and rendered faithful, does not necessarily mean that they should be truly pious, but it is descriptive of those who had been well-trained, and were in due subordination.
