Romans 6:8

"For he who has died has been freed from sin."

Key Reflection

This verse suggests that when a person is spiritually united with Christ in his death, they are freed from the dominion of sin. Just as physical death releases one from earthly obligations, spiritual death through baptism releases believers from sin's grip, allowing them to live new lives in righteousness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verses 8-11. This passage is a confirmation and illustration of what the apostle had said before, Ro 6:5-7. The argument is, that as Christ was once dead but now lives to God, and will no more die, so we, being dead to sin, but living unto God, should not obey sin, but should live only to God. Verse 8. Now if we be dead with Christ. If we be dead in a manner similar to what he was; if we are made dead to sin by his work, as he was dead in the grave. See Barnes "Ro 6:4". We believe. All Christians. It is an article of our faith. This does not refer to the future world so much as to the present. It becomes an article of our belief that we are to live with Christ.
