Psalms 91:8

"A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it will not come near you."

Key Reflection

Psalms 91:8 offers a vivid picture of divine protection through metaphors familiar to first-century readers. The verse speaks of being surrounded by danger—literally, with "a thousand" and "ten thousand" falling at one's side or right hand—but reassures that despite the apparent threat, no harm will come near you. This imagery reflects the cultural understanding of the spread of disease, where a thousand or myriad could symbolize many cases, yet those close to the righteous individual are kept safe by God's watchful care.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Only -That is, This is “all” that will occur to you. The only thing which you have to anticipate is, that you will see how God punishes sinners. With thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked -Your own eyes shall see it. See the notes atPsalms 37:34. You will see the just punishment of the ungodly, the vicious, the profane, the sensual. You will see what is the proper fruit of their conduct; what is the just expression of the views which God takes of their character.
