Psalms 77:16

"You have redeemed your people with your arm, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 77:16, the psalmist reflects on God's past deliverances of his people, specifically mentioning how God redeemed them “with your arm,” a metaphor for divine power and intervention. For the original audience, this phrase would evoke vivid memories of historical deliverance events, such as the Exodus from Egypt, where God’s mighty hand and outstretched arm saved Israel (Exodus 6:6). The reference to "the sons of Jacob and Joseph" underscores that these deliverances were not only for a single generation but encompassed the entire history of the Israelites, emphasizing continuity and divine faithfulness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The waters saw thee ... -The waters of the Red Sea and the Jordan. There is great sublimity in this expression; in representing the waters as conscious of the presence of God, and as fleeing in consternation at his presence. CompareRevelation 20:11;Habakkuk 3:10-11. They were afraid -On the word used here -חולchûl- seePsalms 10:5, note;Psalms 55:4, note. It may mean here to tremble or quake, as in painDeuteronomy 2:25;Joel 2:6. - Alarm, distress, anguish, came over the waters at the presence of God; and they trembled, and fled. The depths also were troubled -The deep waters, or the waters “in” the depths.
