Psalms 74:17

"The day is yours, the night is also yours. You have prepared the light and the sun."

Key Reflection

In the ancient Near East, the concept of divine sovereignty over nature was deeply ingrained. The psalmist declares that both day and night belong to God, emphasizing His control over all aspects of time and light. By asserting that God has prepared the sun and its light, the psalmist underscores God's role as the creator and sustainer of the universe, highlighting His omnipotence and authority over natural phenomena.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thou hast set all the borders of the earth -Thou hast established all the boundaries of the world; that is, the boundaries of the earth itself; or the natural bonndaries of nations and people, made by seas, mountains, rivers, and deserts. The language in regard to the first of these - the earth itself - would be derived from the prevalent mode of speaking, as if the earth were a plane, and had limits - a common mode of expression in the Scriptures, as it is in all ancient writings, and in the common language of men, even of philosophers.
