Psalms 73:16

"When I tried to understand this, it was too painful for me—"

Key Reflection

Psalms 73:16 expresses the psalmist's struggle to comprehend the apparent injustice in God's world where the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous suffer. This verse reveals a deep emotional and intellectual challenge faced by the psalmist, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining faith when confronted with the seeming disparity between virtue and its rewards. The intensity of this pain underscores the profound theological questions that the psalmist grapples with, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of God's ways, which are often beyond human comprehension.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

When I thought to know this -When I endeavored to comprehend this, or to explain it to myself. The idea is that he “thought” on the subject, or “meditated” on it with a view to be able to understand it. He did not express his opinions and feelings to others, but he dwelt on them in his own mind; not to find additional difficulties, not to confirm himself in opposition to God, and not to find new occasions for distrusting the divine government, but to understand exactly how this was.
