"For the LORD hears the needy, and doesn’t despise his captive people."

Key Reflection

In Psalm 69:34, the psalmist assures that God listens to the cries of those in distress (the needy) and does not neglect His suffering people (the captives). This verse reflects a deep trust in God’s compassion and his commitment to rescue and restore the marginalized within Israel, highlighting both divine justice and mercy. The cultural context emphasizes the importance of communal support and the belief that God intervenes on behalf of those who are vulnerable or oppressed, aligning with the broader themes of redemption and restoration found throughout the Psalms.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Let the heaven and earth praise him -All things; all above and all below. The seas -The waters - the oceans. This is in accordance with what often occurs in the Scriptures, when all things, animate and inanimate, are called on to praise God. ComparePsalms 148:1-14. And everything that moveth therein -Margin, as in Hebrew, “creepeth.” Compare the notes atPsalms 8:8. See also the notes atIsaiah 55:12.
