Psalms 59:12

"Don’t kill them, or my people may forget. Scatter them by your power, and bring them down, Lord our shield."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 59:12, the psalmist prays that God should not kill his enemies, as it might cause the people to forget the goodness of God and His protection. Instead, the psalmist requests that God scatter and humble these enemies through His power, emphasizing divine strength over violent retribution. This plea reflects a nuanced understanding of divine justice, where physical destruction is replaced with humility and submission among the adversaries, preserving both the memory of God’s favor and His protective role over his people.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

For the sin of their mouth ... -That is, in belching out words of reproach and malice,Psalms 59:7. Let them even be taken in their pride -In the very midst of their schemes, or while confidently relying on the success of their plans. Even while their hearts are elated, and they are sure of success, let them be arrested, and let their plans be foiled. And for cursing and lying which they speak -That is, on account of the false charges which they have brought against me, and of their bitter imprecations on me.
