Psalms 44:13

"You sell your people for nothing, and have gained nothing from their sale."

Key Reflection

Psalms 44:13 expresses profound sorrow over a devastating loss. The nation's leaders are accused of selling the people to foreign enemies without receiving any real benefit in return, highlighting the emptiness and futility of such actions from God’s perspective. This verse underscores the idea that true leadership should seek the welfare and prosperity of its people, not just their exploitation or sacrifice for personal gain.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors -Compare the notes atPsalms 39:8. The word neighbors here refers to surrounding people or nations. They were reproached, scorned, and derided as forsaken by God, and given up to their foes. They no longer commanded the admiration of mankind as a prosperous, favored, happy people. Surrounding nations treated them with contempt as inspiring no fear, and as having nothing to entitle them to respect.
