Psalms 37:15

"The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to kill those who are upright on the path."

Key Reflection

In the context of ancient Israel, Psalms 37:15 describes a society where the wicked wielded power through violence and deceit. The poet envisions a world where the wealthy and influential (the wicked) used their resources to oppress the less fortunate, employing both physical force ("drawn out the sword") and subterfuge ("bent their bow") to suppress those who followed God's path of righteousness and justice. This verse reflects the common experience of the Israelites, who often faced exploitation by powerful enemies and internal strife, making it a poignant reminder of the contrast between the righteous and the corrupt in society.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Their sword shall enter into their own heart -Their purposes will recoil on themselves; or they will themselves suffer what they had devised for others. See the same sentiment expressed inPsalms 7:15-16;Psalms 9:15; compareEsther 7:10. And their bows shall be broken -They will be defeated in their plans. God will cut them off, and not suffer them to execute their designs.
