Psalms 3:1

"Psalms."

Key Reflection

LORD, how my adversaries have increased! Many are those who rise up against me. In ancient Israel, this psalm likely resonated deeply with readers faced with external threats and internal conflicts within the community. The phrase "adversaries have increased" reflects a common historical context of political tensions and social strife, where enemies both physical and metaphorical were seen as multiplying. This verse captures the emotional and existential struggle that many Israelites would have experienced, encapsulating their cries for divine protection against numerous opponents.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Lord, how are they increased -How are they multiplied; or, how numerous they are. Perhaps the idea is, that at first they seemed to be comparatively few in number, but had now so multiplied as to endanger his crown and life. This is an appropriate expression on the supposition that it refers to Absalom.
