Psalms 21:9

"Your hand will find out all of your enemies. Your right hand will find out those who hate you."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 21:9, the psalmist uses vivid imagery to describe God's ultimate victory over his enemies. The phrase "Your hand will find out all of your enemies" (WEB translation) personifies God’s active involvement in bringing justice and judgment. This imagery reflects a cultural context where physical action often symbolized divine intervention; thus, it conveys the idea that God will personally and thoroughly deal with those who oppose him. Similarly, "Your right hand will find out those who hate you" suggests that even the most cunning or hidden foes cannot escape God's wrath, emphasizing His comprehensive control over all circumstances.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger -Thou shalt consume or destroy them, “as if” they “were” burned in a heated oven. Or, they shall burn, as if they were a flaming oven; that is, they would be wholly consumed. The word rendered “oven” -תנורtannûr- means either an “oven” or a “furnace.” It is rendered “furnace and furnaces” inGenesis 15:17;Nehemiah 3:11;Nehemiah 12:38;Isaiah 31:9; and, as here, “oven” or “ovens,” inExodus 8:3;Leviticus 2:4;Leviticus 7:9;Leviticus 11:35;Leviticus 26:26;Lamentations 5:10;Hosea 7:4,Hosea 7:6-7;Malachi 4:1. It does not occur elsewhere.
