Psalms 18:35

"He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms bend a bow of bronze."

Key Reflection

In the context of ancient Israel, this psalm reflects the warrior culture where physical strength and skill in combat were highly valued. The imagery of bending a bow made of bronze, an extremely sturdy material, symbolizes the divine empowerment to engage in fierce battles with formidable enemies. For the original audience, this verse underscored the idea that God not only grants victory but also provides the physical prowess necessary for warfare, emphasizing His role as both protector and mighty warrior.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvations -Thou hast saved me as with a shield; thou hast thrown thy shield before me in times of danger. See the note atPsalms 5:12. And thy right hand hath holden me up -Thou hast sustained me when in danger of failing, as if thou hadst upheld me with thine own hand. And thy gentleness hath made me great -Margin, β€œor, with thy meekness thou hast multiplied me.” The word here rendered gentleness, evidently means here favor, goodness, kindness. It commonly means humility, modesty, as applied to men; as applied to God, it means mildness, clemency, favor.
