Psalms 149:3

"Let Israel rejoice in him who made them. Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King."

Key Reflection

Psalms 149:3 calls for Israel to celebrate and rejoice, expressing a deep sense of gratitude towards God who created them. For the ancient Israelites, this verse would resonate with their national identity and covenant relationship with Yahweh, emphasizing his role as both their creator and king, especially in light of Jerusalem as Zion, the place where his presence was most tangible.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Let them praise his name in the dance -Margin, with the pipe. The Hebrew word here -מחולmâchôl- is rendered dancing inPsalms 30:11; dance, as here,Psalms 150:4(where also the margin has pipe);Jeremiah 31:13;Lamentations 5:15; dances,Jeremiah 31:4. It does not elsewhere occur. On the verbחולchûl, seePsalms 10:5, note;Psalms 51:5, note. Here it cannot be improper to regard it as referring to that measured tread, or solemn movement which sometimes constituted a part of worship:2 Samuel 6:14. Such a movement cannot be proved to be wrong in worship; whether it is wise or expedient is a different matter.
