Psalms 106:23

"wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome things by the Red Sea."

Key Reflection

The verse from Psalms 106:23 recounts Israel's miraculous deliverance in the land of Ham (often referring to Egypt) and the awe-inspiring events at the Red Sea. For the original audience, these were not just any historical events but vivid reminders of God’s powerful acts that secured their freedom from slavery and established His sovereignty over the natural world. The miraculous crossing of the Red Sea would have been particularly shocking, as it demonstrated God's control over the elements, ensuring Israel's passage while drowning Pharaoh’s army.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Therefore he said that he would destroy them -SeeExodus 32:10-14. He threatened to destroy them, and he would have done it, if Moses had not interposed and pleaded for them. There was nothing strange or very unusual in this. Many a descending curse upon guilty people is turned away by prayer, and by human intervention. We are constantly endeavoring to turn aside evils which would come upon others - by our intervention - by labor or by prayer.
