Psalms 10:4

"For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings. He blesses the greedy and condemns the LORD."

Key Reflection

In first-century Israel, the verse in Psalms 10:4 highlights the pervasive corruption of society where the wicked pridefully indulge in their own desires and selfish ambitions, even going so far as to publicly commend such behavior while simultaneously rejecting God's authority. This would have resonated with the original audience, who lived under a covenant that expected moral integrity and reverence for the divine law, making such hypocrisy starkly apparent and morally repugnant.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The wicked, through the pride of his countenance -In consequence of his pride; or, his pride is the reason of what is here stated. The “pride of his countenance” is a phrase that is used because pride shows itself mainly in the countenance, or in a lofty air and manner. The design is to state the influence of pride in producing the effect here specified. Will not seek after God -The phrase “after God,” is supplied by our translators.
