Proverbs 9:13

"If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it."

Key Reflection

This verse suggests that true wisdom benefits the individual who possesses it, while mocking and derision bring only personal consequences. Those who mock wisdom isolate themselves from its true value and must bear the brunt of their own actions alone.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The picture of the harlot as the representative of the sensual life, the Folly between which and Wisdom the young man has to make his choice (Proverbs 9:3note). “Simple,” in the worst sense, as open to all forms of evil. “Knoweth nothing,” ignorant with the ignorance which is willful and reckless.
