Proverbs 8:31

"then I was the craftsman by his side. I was a delight day by day, always rejoicing before him,"

Key Reflection

In Proverbs 8:31, wisdom speaks of its relationship with God, describing itself as a constant source of joy and delight in the divine presence. This verse portrays an intimate bond where wisdom rejoices continually in the face of God’s glory, highlighting the dynamic and joyful nature of their interaction. The imagery of being "the craftsman by his side" suggests a close collaboration, indicating that wisdom is not merely a passive attribute but actively participates in the creative process under divine guidance.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Wisdom rejoices yet more in the world as inhabited by God’s rational creatures. (compareIsaiah 45:18). Giving joy and delight to God, she finds her delight among the sons of men. These words, like the rest, are as an unconscious prophecy fulfilled in the Divine Word, in whom were “hid all the treasures of Wisdom.” Compare the marginal reference: in Him the Father was well pleased; and yet His “joy also is fulfilled,” not in the glory of the material universe, but in His work among the sons of men.
