Proverbs 6:12

"so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man."

Key Reflection

Proverbs 6:12 warns that one's own reckless actions can lead to poverty and scarcity coming upon them like a thief in the night and an armed intruder, respectively. This verse underscores the consequences of heedless behavior and suggests that personal irresponsibility often results in dire financial straits. The imagery of a robber and an armed man vividly conveys how one's own careless decisions can bring about severe and sudden hardships.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

A naughty person -literally, “a man of Belial,” i. e., a worthless man (see theDeuteronomy 13:13note). This is the portrait of the man who is not to be trusted, whose look and gestures warn against him all who can observe. His speech is tortuous and crafty; his wink tells the accomplice that the victim is already snared; his gestures with foot and hand are half in deceit, and half in mockery.
