Proverbs 29:13

"If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked."

Key Reflection

In first-century Israel, where governance often relied heavily on oral tradition and word of mouth, rulers who listened to falsehoods set a dangerous precedent. The original audience would have understood that such leaders not only betrayed their duty of truth but also corrupted the entire administrative structure. Officials, seeing their superior fall for lies, would rationalize dishonesty as acceptable, thereby undermining the integrity of the whole government.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Better, The poor and the oppressor. “Usurer,” as in the margin expresses the special form of oppression from which the poor suffer most at the hands of the rich. God has made them both and bestows His light equally on both.
