Proverbs 28:17

"A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment. One who hates ill-gotten gain will have long days."

Key Reflection

A tyrannical ruler lacks wisdom and fails to make sound decisions, reflecting his corrupt nature. Conversely, a leader who detests dishonest wealth will experience enduring success and stability in their reign, as they govern justly and with integrity. The original audience would have understood that such a ruler’s mismanagement and ethical failings would eventually lead to the downfall of their kingdom, while those who upheld moral standards would secure lasting prosperity for themselves and their people.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The case of willful murder, not the lesser crime of manslaughter for which the cities of refuge were appointed. One, with that guilt on his soul, is simply hasting on to his own destruction. Those who see him must simply stand aloof, and let God’s judgments fulfill themselves.
