Proverbs 20:21

"Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness."

Key Reflection

In Proverbs 20:21, the act of cursing one's parents is metaphorically described as extinguishing a light source, specifically "his lamp," which in this context symbolizes prosperity and well-being. This imagery underscores the severe consequences of such an action within the cultural and ethical framework of ancient Israel, where honoring parents was paramount, and any transgression against them brought divine retribution, effectively plunging the individual into darkness both literally and figuratively.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Or, An inheritance gotten hastily (greedily sought after by unjust means) at the beginning, the end thereof shall not be blessed. Another reading gives, “an inheritance loathed, (compareZechariah 11:8), or with a curse upon it.” The King James Version agrees with the versions.
