In first-century Israel, a "scoffer" (מַכְסִיס mākṣîs) was someone who openly mocked religion and wisdom teachings, often challenging the established norms and authorities. These individuals sought out intellectual discussions but found no satisfaction because their hearts were not genuinely seeking truth. Conversely, those with discernment readily embraced wise counsel, making it their own through careful consideration and application—much like how one would easily absorb knowledge from a book they find interesting.
