Proverbs 13:9

"The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats."

Key Reflection

Proverbs 13:9 teaches that wealth can influence one's response to warnings and consequences, suggesting that those with financial resources may be more likely to heed advice or face threats. The verse contrasts the rich, who have the means to address problems or threats posed by their actions, with the poor, who are less affected by such dire warnings because they lack the same material means to do so. This reflects a cultural context where wealth often held significant social and practical power, influencing one's ability to act on advice or face consequences.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Very beautiful in its poetry is the idea of the light “rejoicing” in its brightness (comparePsalms 19:5;Job 38:7). Note also the distinction between the “light” and the “lamp.” The righteous ones have the true light in them. That which belongs to the wicked is only derived and temporary, and even that shall be extinguished before long. Compare a like distinction inJohn 1:8;John 5:35.
