Obadiah 1:9

"Your mighty men, Teman, will be dismayed, to the end that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter."

Key Reflection

Obadiah 1:9 speaks to the devastation that will come upon the mighty warriors of Teman, a region associated with Esau (Edom). This verse highlights the comprehensive nature of the destruction, indicating that no one from Mount Seir (a reference to Edom) will be spared. The imagery of "cut off by slaughter" conveys a sense of complete annihilation, leaving nothing but fear and despair among those who once held power.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And thy mighty, O Teman, shall be dismayed -The pagan, more religiously than we, ascribed panic to the immediate action of one of their gods, or to Nature deified, Pan, i. e., the Universe: wrong as to the being whom they “ignorantly worshiped;” right, in ascribing it to what they thought a divine agency. Holy Scripture at times discovers the hidden agency, that we may acknowledge God’s Hand in those terrors which we cannot account for.
