Numbers 24:22

"He looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said, “Your dwelling place is strong. Your nest is set in the rock."

Key Reflection

Numbers 24:22 describes a moment when Balaam, a diviner from Pethor, addresses the Kenite people, likely referring to Jethro, Moses' father-in-law. This verse paints a picture of the Kenites as a resilient and secure group, with their dwellings firmly established in rocky terrain. The imagery of "nest set in the rock" suggests stability and protection, perhaps drawing attention to the Kenites' skillful use of harsh environments for survival. This description sets up an interesting contrast with Balaam's later ominous prophecy about Kain, which hints at the temporary nature of this security despite its current strength.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Render, For Kain shall surely not be destroyed (literally “be for destruction”) until Asshur, etc. The words are not, as they appear in the King James Version, a prediction of evil to the Kenites, but a promise, on the contrary, of safety to be long continued to them (compareNumbers 10:32;Jeremiah 35:19).
