Numbers 20:8

"The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,"

Key Reflection

In Numbers 20:8, the Lord instructs Moses to take his rod and speak to a rock in order to bring forth water for the Israelites. This event is set against the backdrop of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. The use of Moses's rod and the command to speak to the rock rather than striking it underscores God's sovereignty over the natural world, contrasting with the earlier instance where Moses struck the rock out of frustration (Numbers 20:11-13). This scene highlights both divine authority and human frailty, as Moses fails to fully trust in God's provision by failing to use the singular "I" in his command, a minor yet significant act of humility that foreshadows future events.

Take the rod -That with which the miracles in Egypt had been performed (Exodus 7:8ff;Exodus 7:19ff;Exodus 8:5ff, etc.), and which had been used on a similar occasion at Rephidim (Exodus 17:5following). This rod, as the memorial of so many divine interpositions, was naturally laid up in the tabernacle, and is accordinglyNumbers 20:9described now as taken by Moses “from before the Lord.”
