Nehemiah 6:11

"I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”"

Key Reflection

Nehemiah's encounter with Shemaiah in his home underscores the escalating threat against him and the potential dangers within Jerusalem. Shemaiah's urgent plea for them to meet inside the temple, closing its doors, highlights both the imminent danger and the sanctity of God’s house as a place of safety and protection.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Would go into the temple to save his life -Rather “could go into the temple and live.” For a layman to enter the sanctuary was a capital offence (seeNumbers 18:7).
