Nehemiah 2:1

"Nehemiah."

Key Reflection

In the month Nisan, during the twentieth year of Artaxerxes' reign, Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, seized an unexpected opportunity. The mention of wine before the king alludes to the intimate and potentially dangerous position Nehemiah held; his role as cupbearer made him responsible for serving the monarch's drink, a position that could quickly turn deadly if he were to serve poisoned wine. By picking up the wine and offering it to Artaxerxes, Nehemiah demonstrated both trustworthiness and courage, actions that likely earned him the king’s favor and the chance to request assistance in rebuilding Jerusalem's walls.
