Nehemiah 10:1

"Nehemiah."

Key Reflection

In Nehemiah 10:1, we read, "Now those who sealed were: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah." This verse describes a significant covenant-making process in post-exilic Jerusalem. The act of sealing the covenant, with Nehemiah as the leader and Zedekiah among the signatories, underscores the commitment to rebuild and restore the city and its temple. Given the historical context, this event likely took place after the Babylonian exile, when the Jewish community was eager to reaffirm their dedication to God's commandments and to rebuild their community in accordance with divine will, despite facing numerous challenges.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The “Zidkijah” of this passage is probably the same as “Zadok”Nehemiah 13:13. “Zadok” is expressly called “the scribe,” and it was probably as the scribe who drew up the document that “Zidkijah” signed it immediately after Nehemiah.
