Matthew 9:1

"Matthew."

Key Reflection

In Matthew 9:1, Jesus embarks on a journey across the Sea of Galilee by boat. This action signifies his authority and power, as he moves freely over water, demonstrating divine sovereignty. The historical context of first-century Palestine involves rivers and seas being major thoroughfares for travel and trade; thus, crossing these waters highlights Jesus' role not just as a teacher but as one with the ability to transcend natural boundaries, foreshadowing his ultimate victory over death on the cross.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

MATTHEW CHAPTER 9 Verse 1. And he entered into a ship, etc. Jesus acceded to the request of the people of Gadara, recrossed the lake of Gennesareth, and returned to his own city. By his own city is meant Capernaum, (Mr 2:1) the city which was at that time his home, or where he had his dwelling, See Mt 4:13. This same account, with some additional circumstances, is contained in Mr 2:3-12, and Lu 5:18-26. __________________________________________________________________
