Matthew 4:8

"Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”"

Key Reflection

In Matthew 4:8, Jesus paraphrases Deuteronomy 6:16 to rebuke Satan's suggestion of a similar temptation experienced by Moses (Exodus 20:17). The original audience would have understood that testing God goes against the covenantal relationship established in Exodus, where Israel was instructed not to put YHWH to the test. This verse underscores Jesus' commitment to fulfilling the Law and his opposition to any form of tempting or challenging God's will or sovereignty.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 8. An exceeding high mountain. It is not known what mountain this was. It was probably some elevated place in the vicinity of Jerusalem, on the top of which could be seen no small part of the land of Palestine. The Abbe Mariti speaks of a mountain on which he was, which answers to the description here.
