Matthew 11:19

"For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’"

Key Reflection

In first-century Judea, John the Baptist's austere lifestyle was seen as odd by many, who struggled to reconcile his strict asceticism with their expectations of a messianic figure. The people’s suspicion that he might be possessed by a demon reflected both their cultural norms around piety and their desire for a more conventional messiah who would bring visible prosperity and political liberation.
