Mark 14:41

"Again he returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they didn’t know what to answer him."

Key Reflection

In Mark 14:41, Jesus returns to his disciples after praying in Gethsemane for a third time and finds them sleeping due to their weariness. This moment highlights the human weakness of even those closest to Christ, as they fail to stay awake despite being given the opportunity to pray and remain vigilant. The original audience would have recognized this scene as a critique of faithfulness and preparedness, especially considering the high stakes of what was about to unfold—Judas's betrayal and Jesus’s impending arrest.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 41. It is enough. There has been much difficulty in determining the meaning of this phrase. Campbell translates it, "All is over;" i.e., the time when you could have been of service to me is gone by. They might have aided him by watching for him, when they were sleeping; but now the time was past, and he was already, as it were, in the hands of his enemies. It is not improbable, however, that after his agony some time elapsed before Judas came. He had required them to watch, i. e., to keep awake, during that season of agony. After that, they might have been suffered to sleep, while Jesus watched alone.
