Mark 12:16
"Shall we give, or shall we not give?” But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.”"
Key Reflection
In Mark 12:16, Jesus confronts the religious leaders who are testing him to see if he will support the Roman tax. The original audience would have recognized this as a challenge aimed at trapping Jesus, given the tension between their commitment to Jewish law and their perceived obligation to pay taxes imposed by Rome. By asking for a denarius, Jesus invites them to reveal their true motives, thus exposing their hypocrisy before the crowd.
