Luke 2:36

"Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”"

Key Reflection

In Luke 2:36, Simeon's statement to Mary after Jesus' presentation in the temple carries profound significance. While the exact Greek text does not include the word "sword," many translations render it as such, drawing on a common metaphor of a sword piercing the heart to reveal inner thoughts. This imagery underscores that Mary would experience deep sorrow and pain through her son's suffering, which would ultimately lead to a revealing of the true hearts of many people who would react to Jesus in various ways—some with love and acceptance, others with hatred and rejection.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 36. Of the tribe of Aser. The tribe of Aser, or Asher, dwelt in the northern part of the land of Canaan. Why Anna was called a prophetess is not known. It might be because she had been the wife of a prophet, or because she was employed in celebrating the praises of God (comp. 1 Ch 25:1,2,4; 1 Sa 10:5) , or because she herself foretold future events, being inspired. __________________________________________________________________
