Leviticus 10:2

"Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them."

Key Reflection

Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, each took a censer and performed an unauthorized ritual by offering strange fire before the LORD, contrary to the precise instructions Moses had received from God. This act would have been shocking to the Israelites, as it violated the strict sacrificial laws that were meant to maintain purity and distinction between the holy priesthood and common practice, highlighting the severity of divine law and the consequences of disobedience.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The fire which had just before sanctified the ministry of Aaron as well pleasing to God, now brought to destruction his two eldest sons because they did not sanctify Yahweh in their hearts, but dared to perform a self-willed act of worship; just as the same Gospel is to one a savor of life unto life, and to another a savor of death unto death2 Corinthians 2:16.
