Lamentations 1:20

"“I called for my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, while they sought food for themselves to refresh their souls."

Key Reflection

This verse vividly portrays a city's spiritual despair, where even those in positions of religious leadership failed their community. The people’s “lovers” (likely referring to false gods or false hopes) proved unfaithful, and the priests and elders, who should have been guiding moral and spiritual life, abandoned their roles for personal gain, leaving the city spiritually destitute.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Troubled -Or, inflamed with sorrow. Turned within me -Agitated violently. At home there is as death -i. e. “in the house” there are pale pining forms, wasting with hunger, and presenting the appearance of death.
