Judges 9:50

"All the people likewise each cut down his bough, followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women."

Key Reflection

This scene depicts the complete destruction of those who opposed Abimelech, symbolizing the wrathful end to rebellion. By cutting down boughs and setting fire to the stronghold, the people act in unison, illustrating both their willingness to follow Abimelech's lead and the devastating consequences of civil strife.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The men of Thebez (modern Tubas) had, doubtless, joined the Shechemites in their rebellion against Abimelech.
