Judges 6:24

"The LORD said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”"

Key Reflection

In Judges 6:24, God reassures Gideon, who is experiencing fear and anxiety as he prepares to face the Midianite invasion alone. This divine assurance comes at a critical moment when Gideon doubts his ability to lead Israel in this significant battle. The original audience would have recognized that this encounter was part of a broader narrative about a god who intervenes personally to support his people, emphasizing His sovereignty and faithfulness even in times of personal fear and uncertainty.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Gideon’s naming the altar which he built, in commemoration of the words of peace spoken by the Angel, is very similar to what we read of AbrahamGenesis 22:14, and of Moses (Exodus 17:15, when he named the altar Jehovah-nissi).
