Judges 16:20

"She made him sleep on her knees; and she called for a man and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him."

Key Reflection

In Judges 16:20, Delilah's actions were a pivotal moment in Samson’s story, revealing both her cunning and the weakening of his divine strength. By having Samson sleep on her knees and then shaving off his famous seven locks of hair—a significant act given that these locks were connected to his power as granted by God—Delilah systematically reduced Samson's ability to resist her and ultimately tricked him into revealing the source of his strength. This cultural context highlights the importance of physical integrity and the consequences of vulnerability in ancient Near Eastern societies, where such actions could have severe personal and communal implications.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The possession of his extraordinary strength is ascribed (e. g.Judges 13:25) to the presence of the Spirit of the Lord. Now the Lord, or the Spirit of the Lord, had departed from him, and so his strength had gone too. The practical lesson against the presumption of self-dependence, and the all-importance of a hearty dependence upon God’s Holy Spirit, must not be overlooked.
