Jude 1:8

"Yet in the same way, these also in their dreaming defile the flesh, despise authority, and slander celestial beings."

Key Reflection

Jude 1:8 uses vivid imagery to describe a group of people who engage in behaviors that are degrading and rebellious. In this verse, Jude compares their actions to the defilement experienced by those who dream, suggesting that these individuals act in a state of moral or spiritual insensibility. They also show disrespect for authority figures and belittle heavenly beings, reflecting a broader pattern of rebellion against both human and divine authority. This description is set within the context of warning and rebuke, highlighting the severity of their actions and their potential to corrupt others.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 8. Likewise also. In the same way do these persons defile the flesh, or resemble the inhabitants of Sodom; that is, they practise the same kind of vices. What the apostle says is, that their character resembled that of the inhabitants of Sodom; the example which he adduces of the punishment which was brought on those sinners, leaves it to be clearly inferred that the persons of whom he was speaking would be punished in a similar manner. These filthy dreamers. The word filthy has been supplied by our translators, but there is no good reason why it should have been introduced.
