Joshua 5:7

"For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to the LORD’s voice. The LORD swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey."

Key Reflection

The children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for forty years after leaving Egypt, during which time all those who had come out as warriors perished due to their disobedience. This event was a fulfillment of God’s promise that they would not enter the promised land until a new generation arose, one that had been circumcised and thus spiritually renewed after their long journey. The original audience understood this as a direct consequence of their failure to trust in God's leadership and the need for a new, faithful generation to inherit the land.
