Joshua 3:1

"Joshua."

Key Reflection

In Joshua 3:1, we read, "Joshua rose early in the morning; and they moved from Shittim and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel. They camped there before they crossed over." This verse sets the stage for a significant moment in Israel's journey from slavery to freedom. The act of Joshua rising early demonstrates his commitment and leadership, while moving from Shittim to the Jordan River marks their transition from the wilderness of Moab to the promised land. This passage highlights not only the physical movement but also the spiritual and symbolic significance of crossing into new territory under divine guidance.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

“The acacia groves” (Exodus 25:5note) of Shittim on both sides of Jordan line the upper terraces of the valley (compare2 Kings 6:4). They would be in this part at some six miles distance from the river itself.
