Joshua 18:13

"Their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan. The border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward. It ended at the wilderness of Beth Aven."

Key Reflection

The northern border described here for the tribe of Benjamin, starting from the Jordan River and extending northward to Jericho, then climbing west into the hill country, finally ending at Beth Aven (often identified as the notorious site of Eliphalet’s sin in Judges 20:48), would have been familiar territory to the original audience. This border delineated a region rich with historical and geographical markers—Jericho being both a significant ancient city and a symbol of God's miraculous provision, while Beth Aven carried a negative connotation due to its association with idolatry and sin. Thus, this border not only defined territorial boundaries but also encapsulated the complex narrative of Israel’s past, including triumphs and challenges.
