Joshua 13:4

"from the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even to the border of Ekron northward, which is counted as Canaanite; the five lords of the Philistines; the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avvim,"

Key Reflection

This passage delineates the southern boundary of the Promised Land, emphasizing the conquest of both Canaanite cities and Philistine territories. It underscores the comprehensive scope of Israel's territorial expansion, encompassing diverse populations under divine mandate.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Read “on the south,” and connect the words with the verse preceding. They indicate the southern limit of the still unconquered territory in this neighborhood, asJoshua 13:3gives the northern one. Mearah -The “cave” (see the margin) has been referred to “Mugar Jczzin” (“cave of Jezzin”), between Tyre and Sidon, or to a district characterized by deep cave-like ravines near Sidon and Dan-Laish.
