In John 6:20, after the disciples have been rowing hard for some distance—around twenty-five to thirty stadia (roughly two to three miles)—they suddenly see Jesus walking on the sea and approaching their boat. This miraculous sight would have been both awe-inspiring and terrifying, as it defied their understanding of nature and human limitations. The cultural context of first-century Palestine emphasized the natural order, making such a divine intervention all the more significant in validating Jesus' authority and divinity to his followers.
