John 18:22

"Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”"

Key Reflection

In this verse, Jesus redirects the interrogator's focus back to His teachings and their witnesses, emphasizing that the truth about Him is not hidden but accessible through those who have heard and followed His words. This underscores the importance of relying on Scripture and community for understanding, rather than seeking answers solely from Him in that moment.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 22. One of the officers. One of the inferior officers, or those who attended on the court. With the palm of his hand. This may mean, wave him a blow either with the open hand or with a rod"--the Greek does not determine which. In whatever way it was done, it was a violation of all law and justice. Jesus had showed no disrespect for the office of the high-priest, and if he had, this was not the proper way to punish it.
